The Deacon talks to Saint Joe's portrait

Saint Joe is the name given to a man who was once the captain of the Deez.

Centuries later, after the flooding of the world, he was claimed as the patron saint of the Smokers who resided in the husk of the same ship.

The Smoker's quasi-religious leader, the Deacon, had a portrait of Saint Joe in his chamber in the old bridge tower, and routinely called on the spirit of Saint Joe for luck and victory.

Behind the scenes[]

  • "Saint Joe" is is based on Joseph Hazelwood, who was captain of the Exxon Valdez at the time of the disastrous 1989 oil spill off the coast of Alaska, and during which he was accused of being intoxicated.
  • There is no reference to Saint Joe in the novelisation of the film. The novel was written before the film script was finalised, and possibly before the reference to Saint Joe and by extension the Exxon Valdez had yet to be agreed upon and/or confirmed when Max Allan Collins wrote the book.
